ないと” (naito) is a grammatical construct in Japanese that is used to express a negative consequence or result. It is translated as “if not” or “without.”

Examples

  1. 親指がないと、何も掴めません。 Without the thumb we couldn’t grasp anything.  
  2. エプロンをしないと服が汚れます。 Your clothes will get dirty if you don’t wear an apron.  
  3. ふとんをかけないと寝冷えしますよ If you sleep without a duvet you may catch a chill.  
  4. あまり長くならないと良いのですが。 I hope it doesn’t take too long.
  5. いい子にしてないとサンタさん来ないよ。 If you don’t behave, Santa won’t come.  
  6. トムはメガネがないと何も読めないんだ。 Tom can’t read without his glasses.
