Since this question is considered to be less polite, you should never use it to ask for the age of a person directly.

However, it is important to note that it is impolite to inquire about the age of a person (especially older people) in Japan. Therefore, it is better to avoid the question. Nonetheless, if you have to ask about it, you should use a polite question and friendly facial expression that will make the person more open to answering you.
