In Japanese learning Journey , If you want to improve your skills in Japanese, there are a lot of things to learn, one of them is Particle助詞 (joshi).

There are many type of particles in Japanese, In this lesson you will learn about “は”

So, How to use  は (wa) ?(wa)” is a post-positional particle and has no meaning. “” is pronounced “wa” when it is a post-positional particle.  This particle indicate the topic of sentence and tells the listener what the sentence is talking about.

JLPT N5 Grammar

  1. N1 は N2 です。

Grammar  Structure :   N1 は N2 です。

Meaning                   :    N1 is N2.

“です” is an auxiliary verb and is the same meaning as Is, am , are in English.

Now let’s take a look at some examples.

1. わたし アメリカ人です。 I am American.

2. 佐藤さん学生です。 Mr.Satou is a student.

3. わたし タイの 学生です。 I am an Thai student.

  • N1 は N2 では(じゃ) ありません。

Grammar Structure:   N1 は N2 では(じゃ) ありません。

Meaning                   :     N1 is not N2.“

This is the negative form of です. This sentence means “N1 is not N2”.

“では” is formal and “じゃ” is casual.

Examples :

1.Aさんは ちゅうごくじんでは ありません。かんこくじんです。

Mr.A is not Chinese. He is Korean.

2.わたしは がくせいでは ありません。

I am not a student.

3.あのかたは いしゃでは ありません。 かいしゃいんです。

That person is not a doctor. He is a company employee.

Until here you learnt basic sentence structure , “は..です。”  And also negative form of です。、ではありません。

How to ask question in Japanese

  • N1 は N2 ですか。

Grammar Structure :  N1 は N2 ですか。

Meaning           : Is N1 N2?

You can put か after です, The particle かis used to express doubt, uncertainty, or hesitation of the speaker. Sentences that end with ですか are questions, and usually end with a rising intonation.

Let take a look at examples :

1.あのかたは どなたですか。

Who is that person? (in polite way)

2.あなたは 医者ですか。

Are you an Doctor?

3.にほんは あついですか。

Is Japan hot?

How to say past tense in Japanese

4.N1 は N2でした。

Grammar Structure :  N1 は N2でした。

Meaning                    :  N1 was N2.

You can use “でした” to express the past affirmative past tense of “です”.

It shows that N2 is the explanation about the past of N1. It means “was” or “were” in English.

Let look at some examples :

1.わたしは がくせいでした。

I was a student.

2.わたしの ともだちは 医者でした。

My friend was an Doctor.

3.佐藤さんは かいしゃいんでした。

Mr.Satou was an employee.

How to say negative past tense in Japanese.

We can also you は…..です。Form

  • N1 は N2 ではありませんでした。

Grammar Structure :  N1 は N2 ではありませんでした。

Meaning                    :  N1 was not N2.

This sentence means “N1 was not N2”. “ではありませんでした” is a negative past tense of a noun sentence. It means “wasn’t” or “weren’t” in English.

Examples :

1.やまださんは 医者では ありませんでした。

Mr. Yamada  was not a doctor.

2.あのかたは いしゃでは ありませんでした。 せんせいでした。

He wasn’t a doctor, he was a teacher.

How to say “ also , too“ も in Japanese

N1 は N3 です。 N2 も N3 です。

Grammar Structure :  N1 は N3 です。 N2 も N3 です。

Meaning                    : N1 is N3. N2 is N3,too.

You can also Use は with も ,

“も” is a post-positional particle and is used when repeating the same thing. It means “also” and “too” in English.

Let take a look at examples sentence :

1.わたしは ちゅうごくじんです。 わたしの ともだちも ちゅうごくじんです。

I am Chinese. My friend is Chinese too.

2. A: わたしは サラリーマンです。あなたも サラリーマンですか。

I am a company employee. Are you a employee too?

B: いいえ、 わたしは こうこうの せんせいです。

No, I am a high school teacher.

Conclusion

Particles are a very important Key of the Japanese language. The particles give us critical information about the whole sentence meaning. if you used wrong particles , the whole meaning of the sentence could change.
