Japanese Meaning of 先 (さき) saki

Japanese Vocabulary: 先 (さき)

Meaning:“front,” “before,” or “previous” 

It can be used to refer to a location, time, or position that is ahead of or preceding something else. 

For example, 先頭 (さきがしら) means “front,” “head,” or “forefront,” and 先週 (さきしゅう) means “last week.”

  1. 先に飲み物を注文しましょう。 Let’s order drinks first.
  2. 先にご飯を食べて、後で映画館で会いましょう。 

First, I’m going to eat. Later let’s meet at the movie theatre.

  1. 私はあなたより3メートル先にゴールしました。

I finished the race three (3) meters ahead of you. > I won the race BY three (3) meters.

  1. 先に帰ることにしました。I decided to go home first.
  2. 先に出かけることにしました。I decided to leave first.
