Meaning: Graduation

“卒業” is the Japanese word for “graduation.” It is typically used to refer to the completion of a school program, such as high school or university, and the awarding of a degree or diploma. It can also be used more broadly to refer to completing any course of study or training program.

“Graduation” can be used in the following situations:

  1. A student who has completed all the requirements for their high school diploma might say “私は今年卒業します” (“I will graduate this year”).
  2. A college student who has finished their undergraduate degree might say 

“私は大学を卒業した” (“I graduated from college”).

  1. Someone who has completed a vocational training program might say 

“私は看護師の資格を取るために卒業しました” (“I graduated in order to get my nursing license”).

  1. A student who has completed all the requirements for a graduate degree might say 

“私は修士課程を卒業した” (“I graduated from the master’s program”).

  1. A student who has completed all the requirements for a doctoral degree might say 

“私は博士号を卒業した” (“I graduated with a PhD”).

  1. A student who has completed a language program might say, 

“私は英語を学んで卒業しました” (“I studied English and graduated”).

  1. Someone who has completed a cooking course might say 

“私は料理のコースを修了して卒業しました” (“I completed a cooking course and graduated”).

  1. A student who has completed all the requirements for a law degree might say 

“私は法律を学んで卒業しました” (“I studied law and graduated”).

  1. Someone who has completed a computer programming course might say 

“私はプログラミングのコースを修了して卒業しました” (“I completed a programming course and graduated”).

  1. A student who has completed all the requirements for a medical degree might say 

“私は医学を学んで卒業しました” (“I studied medicine and graduated”).
