Japanese Meaning of まず (mazu) | JLPT N4

Japanese Vocabulary: まず

Meaning: “first,” “to begin with,” or “initially.” 

This term commonly indicates the order of actions or steps in a process. In addition, it expresses the speaker’s suggestion to start with something before moving on.

Examples

  1. まず、食べてみてください。 First, please try to eat it.  
  2. まずは、更衣室で裸になる。 First, you undress in the changing room.  
  3. まず食券を買ってください。 First, please buy a meal ticket.
  4. まず掃除をしてもらうと思う。 First I think I will have you clean.  
  5. まず最初に君が謝るのが筋だ。 It would be reasonable for you to apologize first.  
  6. まず相手の動きを見ましょう。 First, watch your opponent’s moves.
  7. 考える前にまずやってみよう。 Before you think, try.  
  8. 帰ったらまず手を洗いましょう。 When you get home, wash your hands first.  
  9. 行く前にまず何かを食べようよ。 Before we go, first let’s eat something.
  10. まずは、古着屋さんでのレジ担当。 To begin with, I’ll be in charge of the register at the used clothing shop.
