JLPT N2 Grammar: ては・では (tewa /dewa) Meaning

ては / では (tewa / dewa). Meaning: whenever; if; when~; repetitive action.

The meaning of meaning 1 is if; since + bad results

A similar meaning can be expressed with this grammar word たら), but only in negative terms.

2nd meaning – whenever [A] occurs, [B] ..

It refers to a situation that is repeated or habitual. A good thing always leads to a bad thing.

The meaning of this word may only be used to describe verbs in the て form.

A repeated action can be expressed in this way.

Example:

  1. そんな心配しては、体に悪いですよ。

Your health is at risk if you worry about it.

Headaches prevent me from working.

If I don’t get enough sleep, I won’t be able to concentrate on my studies.

Despite the fact that the department store was on sale, there were so many people I couldn’t get anything to buy.
