JLPT N2 Grammar: だって (datte) Meaning

Japanese grammar is an essential part of learning the Japanese language.

It is the set of rules that govern the way words are combined to form sentences in the Japanese language. Japanese grammar is known for its complex system of particles, which are small words that are added to the end of nouns or verbs to indicate the grammatical function of the word in the sentence.

JLPT N2 Grammar: だって

だって is a colloquial way of saying “because” in Japanese. It is often used in casual speech and can be translated as “because” or “you know.”

Form

Noun + だって even, too

だって + phrase because, but

Example sentence.

A: パンが食べたいんだけど、カロリーが気になる。

B: だって、今日はランニングしたんだもん。

A: I want to eat bread, but I’m worried about the calories.

B: But you know, I went running today.

Example 2:

A: 今日は寒いから、長袖を着るよ。

B: だって、昨日は暑かったんだもの。

A: It’s cold today, so I’ll wear long sleeves.

B: But yesterday was hot, you know.

Example 3:

A: なんで今日のテストで60点しかとれなかったの?

B: だって、勉強してなかったもん。

A: Why did I only get 60 points on today’s test?

B: Because I didn’t study, you know.

Example 4:

A: 今日は早く帰るんだ。

B: だって、明日は朝から会議があるんだもの。

A: I’m going home early today.

B: But you know, I have a meeting tomorrow morning.

Example 5:

A: なんでこのレストランに来たの?

B: だって、ここのハンバーガーが有名だったんだもん。

A: Why did we come to this restaurant?

B: Because I heard that the hamburgers here are famous, you know.
