JLPT N2 Grammar: もの / もん (mono / mon) Meaning

Japanese grammar is known for its complex system of particles, which are small words that are added to the end of nouns or verbs to indicate the grammatical function of the word in the sentence.

JLPT N2 Grammar: もの / もん (mono / mon) Meaning

もの” is a particle in Japanese that is used to express a feeling or emotion, often a feeling of sadness or resignation. It can be translated as “though” or “despite.”

Here are a few examples of how “もの” can be used in a sentence:

彼女が病気であることを知ったもの、私はとても悲しんでいます。 

(Even though I knew she was sick, I was despondent.)

彼が言ったことを信じるもの、私はまだ彼を信用している。

 (Despite what he said, I still trust him.)

In these examples, “もの” expresses the speaker’s feelings or emotions about a situation. It can also be used to contrast two ideas or to show that something happened despite particular circumstances.

Verb (casual) +(んだ)

Noun + なんだ もの / もん

な-adjective + なんだ

い-adjective +(んだ)

  1. 私たちはたくさんの試験を受けたもの、最終的には合格した。 (Even though we took many exams, we ultimately passed.)
  1. 彼らは貧しいもの、それでも幸せそうに見える。 (Even though they are poor, they seem happy.)
  1. 私たちは長い間働いたもの、やっと休暇を取ることができる。 (Even though we have worked for a long time, we can finally take a vacation.)
  1. 彼はとても賢いもの、それでも彼の成功はラッキーなことにも関わっている。 (Even though he is very intelligent, his success is also due to luck.)
  1. 私たちはたくさんの準備をしたもの、それでもこのプロジェクトは失敗した。 (Even though we prepared a lot, this project still failed.)
  1. 彼女はとても忙しいもの、それでも彼女は私たちの手伝いをすることにした。 (Even though she is very busy, she has decided to help us.)
  1. 私たちは天気が悪かったもの、海に行くことができなかった。 (Even though the weather was bad, we couldn’t go to the sea.)
  1. 彼はとても強いもの、それでも彼は負けた。 (Even though he is very strong, he lost.)
