JLPT N2 Kanji: 巻 (kan, maku, maki) Meaning: scroll; volume

Japanese Vocabulary: 巻 (kan, maku, maki)

Meaning: scroll; volume

In general, it means “to roll up” or “to wind” (as in a scroll or a reel of film), but it can also be used in words such as “volume” or “chapter” (as in a book) and “coil” or “spiral” (as in a spring).

  8. 竜巻が町に近づいている。 The tornado is approaching the town.  
  9. リレーの選手は鉢巻をしている The relay athletes are wearing head bands.  
  10. 彼は頭にタオルを巻いていた。 He had a towel tied around his head.
