JLPT N3 Grammar: 代わりに (kawari ni)

JLPT N3 Grammar: 代わりに (kawari ni)

代わりに” (dawari ni) is a Japanese grammar particle that means “instead of” or “in place of.” It is used to indicate that one thing is being substituted for another.

  1. 手紙の代わりにメールをする。 I send an e-mail instead of sending a letter.  
  2. 牛肉の代わりに、鳥肉を使った。 I used chicken instead of beef.  
  3. 肉の代わりに豆腐を使うことも出来ます。 You can use tofu instead of meat.  
  4. ごま油の代わりにオリーブ油を使いましょう。 Let’s use olive oil instead of sesame.  
  5. 雨が降ったら、代わりにDVDを見ましょう。 If it rains, we will watch a DVD instead.  
  6. くぎの代わりにネジを使って棚をとりつけなさい。 Use a screw to hang the shelf instead of a nail.  
  7. 砂糖の代わりに蜂蜜、ないし果物を入れて下さい。 Please add honey or fruit instead of sugar.  
  8. 車を輸出する代わりに、石油や小麦粉を輸入する。 In return for exporting cars, we import things like oil and flour.  
  9. 彼女の代わりに私が昇進するまでは、私たちは友達でした。 She was a friend of mine until I got the promotion instead of her.  
  10. そのため、代わりに、豚の生レバーを出すレストランが増えていた。 For that reason, restaurants that served raw pork liver instead had been increasing.
