JLPT N3 Grammar: あまり (amari) Meaning

Japanese grammar is an essential part of learning the Japanese language.

It is the set of rules that govern the way words are combined to form sentences in the Japanese language. Japanese grammar is known for its complex system of particles, which are small words that are added to the end of nouns or verbs to indicate the grammatical function of the word in the sentence.

You use it when something has happened due to an extreme degree or when something has been done due to an extreme degree.

  1. 彼は緊張のあまりどもった 

He stammered because of nerves.  

  1. 彼は痛みのあまりうずくまった 

He crouched down as the pain was too much for him.

  1. 緊張のあまり、上手にプレゼンテーションができなかった。

I couldn’t give a good presentation because I was too nervous.

  1. 綺麗なあまり、見惚れてしまった。

It was so beautiful that I fell in love with it.

  1. センター試験では考えすぎたあまり時間が足りず、最後まで解けなかった。

I needed more time to solve the center exam because I overthought and needed more time.

  1. ジョンさんはJLPT N1に合格し、嬉しさのあまり泣いてしまった。

John passed JLPT N1 and cried with happiness.

  1. 急いでいたあまりに、大事な書類を家に忘れて来てしまった。

I was so hurried that I forgot an important document at home.

  1. 田中さんは残業しすぎたあまり、体を壊し入院することになった。

After working too many overtime hours, Mr. Tanaka was hospitalized.
