JLPT N3 Grammar: ずに (zuni) Meaning

ずに (zuni) is a grammatical construction in Japanese that is used to express the idea of “without doing something” or “despite not doing something.” 

It is often used in conjunction with negative verb forms to indicate that someone has not done something, but still ended up in a particular state or situation.

Form

Verb (ない stem) ない ず(に)

する changes to せず(に)

  1. 雨が降っているけど、傘を持たずに、出かけたので濡れてしまった。
  2. It’s raining, but I left without bringing an umbrella, so I got wet.”
  1. 彼女は夜遅くまで勉強せずに、朝起きるのがとても困難であった。
  2. She stayed up late studying, so it was very difficult for her to wake up in the morning.
  1. 私は車を運転せずに、その場所まで行くことができますか?
  2. Can I go to that place without driving a car?
  1. 彼はお金をたくさん持っているけど、勉強しずに大学を卒業したので、仕事が見つからない。He has a lot of money, but he graduated from college without studying, so he can’t find a job.”
  1. 私たちは約束をせずにその場を去った。We left without making a promise.
  1. 私は英語を勉強せずに、英語のテストに合格した。

I passed the English test without studying English.

  1. 私たちは日本語を勉強ぜずに、日本へ行った。We went to Japan without studying Japanese.
