The phrase “たとえ~ても (tatoe~temo)” is used to indicate that the speaker is saying something despite a certain condition or circumstance. It can be translated as “even if” or “no matter what.”

FORM

たとえ Verb (て form) + も

Noun + でも

な-adjective + でも

い-adjective + いくても

Examples

  1. たとえ、嵐になっても絶対に行く。 Even if the storm comes, I’ll go for sure.  
  2. たとえ両親が反対しても私は行く。 I will go even if my parents are against it.  
  3. 私って動物にたとえると何だと思う? If you were to compare me to an animal, which animal would you compare me to?  
  4. たとえば、茎を曲げたり、方向を変えたりできます。 For example, they can bend their stems, change their directions, and so forth.  
  5. たとえば、「真面目」であることがあなたの長所なら、「私は真面目なので、職務を不完全な状態にはしません」

For example, if being “serious” is your forte, say, “I am serious, so I do not imperfect my duties.”
