JLPT N4 Grammar: かい (kai) Meaning

JLPT N4 Grammar: かい (kai) Meaning

The particle “かい” (kai) is used in a question to ask if something has happened or if something is true. It can be translated to “or” in English.

  1. 大丈夫 かい? You okay?  
  2. 今朝は飯を食べたかい? Did you have a meal this morning?  
  3. 鈴木君も くる かい? Is Suzuki coming too?  
  4. 「君のランチはそれだけかい? “Is that all you’re having for lunch?” (Structurally: “Is your lunch that only?”)  
  5.  僕は、「モカは、あの鳥のことを知っているのかい?」と聞いた。 “Mocha, do you know about that bird?” I asked.  
  6.  鳥が、「君の家は、どんな家だったか覚えているかい?」と聞いてきた。 The bird asked me, “Do you remember what kind of house your house was?”  
  7.  よう、ジョンさん、カラオケは はじめてだ って きいたけど、本当 かい? Hey, John, I heard that karaoke is a first for you—is that true?
