JLPT N4 Grammar: そうだ (sou da) Meaning: Looks like

JLPT N4 Grammar: そうだ (sou da) 

[意味]

見たり、聞いた情報を他の人に伝えるときに使われる表現。

Meaning: 

“I heard”

Expressions are used to convey the information you have seen or heard from others.

How to use

普通形 + そうです

Example Sentence

・さっき、北海道で地震があったそうですよ。

I heard that there was an earthquake in Hokkaido a while ago.

・天気予報によると、土曜日は雨が降るそうです。

According to the weather forecast, it will rain on Saturday.

・プリンに醤油を入れると、ウニの味になるそうです。

Adding soy sauce to the pudding makes it taste like sea urchin.

・ジョンさんは昨日、彼女と別れたそうです。

I heard that John broke up with his girlfriend yesterday.

[意味]

〜のように見える

話し手が見て感じたことをいう時に使う。

Meaning: 

it looks like

How to use

ADJ.い(Remove い)  + そうです

イ     + くなさそうです

ナ     + そうです

ナ     + じゃなさそう 

Example Sentence

  • このカレーは色が少し赤く、辛そうだ。

This curry is a little red in color and looks spicy.

  • 彼氏が料理を作ってくれたが、見た目が悪くまずそうだ。

My boyfriend cooked for me, but it doesn’t look good and doesn’t look good.

  • わぁ、おいしそうな料理がたくさん。

Wow, so many delicious dishes.

  • マークさんは嬉しそうな表情で教室に入ってきた。

Mark entered the classroom with a happy expression.
