JLPT N4 Grammar: のに (noni) Even Though

Japanese grammar is an essential part of learning the Japanese language.

It is the set of rules that govern the way words are combined to form sentences in the Japanese language. Japanese grammar is known for its complex system of particles, which are small words that are added to the end of nouns or verbs to indicate the grammatical function of the word in the sentence.

JLPT N4 Grammar: のに (noni) Even Though

The particle “のに” can be used to express disappointment or frustration about a situation that is not what one had hoped for or expected. 

It can be translated as “even though,” “despite,” or “in spite of.” It is typically used to connect two clauses, with the first clause stating the disappointing or unexpected situation and the second clause expressing the speaker’s reaction or feelings about it

Form

Verb (casual form)

Noun + な  のに

な-adjective + な

い-adjective

Here are ten sentences using the particle “のに” to express disappointment or frustration:

  1. 私は日本語を勉強しているのに、まだ会話ができません。 (Even though I am studying Japanese, I still can’t have a conversation.)
  2. 彼は遅刻したのに、まだ謝らない。 (Even though he was late, he still hasn’t apologized.)
  3. 彼女は忙しいのに、私のために手伝ってくれる。 (Even though she is busy, she helps me.)
  4. 私は良い仕事をしたのに、プロモーションされなかった。 (Even though I did a good job, I was not promoted.)
  5. 私たちは早く出発したのに、バスが遅れた。 (Even though we left early, the bus was late.)
  6. 彼は優秀なのに、いつも不幸なことが起こる。 (Even though he is excellent, unfortunate things always happen to him.)
  7. 私たちはよくプランを立てたのに、何もうまくいかなかった。 (Even though we planned well, nothing went right.)
  8. 私はたくさんの食べ物を買ったのに、すぐにすべてがなくなった。 (Even though I bought a lot of food, it all disappeared quickly.)
  9. 彼はとても優しいのに、いつも彼女を傷つけてしまう。 (Even though he is very kind, he always hurts her.)
  10. 私は必死で走ったのに、まだゴールにたどり着けなかった。 (Even though I ran with all my might, I still couldn’t reach the goal.)
