JLPT N4 Grammar: ことがある (koto ga aru) Meaning

The expression 「ことがある」 means “to have had the experience of doing something” or “to have done something before.” It can describe an event or situation that has occurred in the past and may or may not happen again in the future.

Example :

  1. 学校でよく勉強したことがある。

I have had the experience of studying hard at school before.

  1. 日本に行ったことがある。 I have been to Japan before.
  2. 私は大学で学生会長をしたことがあります。I have been the student council president in college.
  3. 彼は車を事故で壊したことがあると言っています。He says he has had the experience of crashing his car in an accident.)
  4. 私たちは昔、お祭りで踊りを踊ったことがあります。We have danced a traditional dance at a festival in the past.
  5. 子どもの頃、雪合戦をしたことがありますか?Have you had the experience of having a snowball fight when you were a child?
  6. 私は彼女と別れたことがある。 I have had the experience of breaking up with her.
  7. 私の両親は海外旅行をしたことがあります。My parents have traveled abroad before.
  8. 彼は山に登ったことがあると言っています。He says he has climbed a mountain before.
  9. 私たちはここでカラオケを歌ったことがあります。We have sung karaoke here before.
  10. 子育ては大変ですが、子育てをしたことがある人は、その経験が役に立つでしょう。Child-rearing is tough, but people who have had the experience of raising children will find their experience useful.)
