そうだ (sou da) is a phrase that means “it seems” or “I heard” in Japanese

It is often used to express that you have heard something from someone else or that something appears to be true based on the evidence at hand.

Form

Verb (casual form) そうだ

Noun + だそうです

な-adjective + だ

い-adjective

Here are sentences using そうだ:

  1. あの人、歌が上手だそうです。 (I heard that person is good at singing.)
  2. そうだったら、私も一緒に行きたいです。 (If that’s the case, I’d like to go together too.)
