JLPT N4 Grammar: それでも (sore demo) Meaning

JLPT N4 Grammar: それでも (sore demo) Meaning

“それでも” is a Japanese phrase that translates to “Even so” or “However” in English. It is used to indicate that despite the circumstances or situation, something else is also true or the speaker is making a contrasting statement.

Examples

  1. へえ、それでも、たったの3分か~? Oh, in spite of that, just three minutes?  
  2. それでも、働けただけ、まだましでしたよ。 Even in that situation, the fact that I was able to work at all was still better (than other people).  
  3. それでも、うれしいことは心から喜ぼうって決めた。 But I decided to rejoice from the heart when it comes to happy things.  
  4. 彼女は車を運転できませんが、それでも車を買いました。 Even though she can’t drive, she still bought a car.  
  5. それでも、頑張った自分に、「良くやった!」と言いたい。 But still, I want to say “Good work!” to myself — I worked hard (“to myself who worked hard”).  
  6. 私は全く良い生徒ではなかったが、それでも学校で習った事はたくさんある。 I was never a great student, but I still learned a lot in school.  
  7. そうですね。それでも治らなければ、病院に行ってお医者さんに見てもらいます。  
  8. 私は「英語は母国語ではありません。それでもいいポジションをください」と伝えた。 I told her (“conveyed”) “English is not my native language. Please give me a position in which that would be okay.
