JLPT N4 Grammar: てもらう (te morau) Meaning

てもらう” (te morau) is a Japanese verb phrase that roughly translates to “to receive (from someone). It is often used to express gratitude for something that someone has done for you or given to you.

Verb (て form) もらう

もらいます

もらいたい

もらわない

もらいません

Examples:

  1. この仕事を手伝ってもらう。 I will get someone to help with this work.  
  2. まず掃除をしてもらうと思う。 First I think I will have you clean.  
  3. 郵便局に書類を届けてもらう。 The post office delivers my document(s) for me.  
  4. 舞妓さんの格好をさせてもらう。 I was dressed in the outfit of an apprentice geisha.  
  5. 1年に1回、歯科医に診てもらう。 I get a checkup at the dentist’s office once a year.  
  6. もう一回説明してもらう必要がある。 It is necessary to have it explained once more.  
  7. よく横浜で、手相占いをしてもらう。 I often go for a palm reading in Yokohama.  
  8. 彼女は占いが好きでたまに見てもらう She likes fortune telling, so she occasionally goes to have her fortune told.  
  9. 迎えに来てもらうまでもありません。 There is not even a chance of getting someone to pick us up.  
  10. 髪の毛を切ってもらうところでした。 I was on the verge of having my hair cut.  
  11. クリスマスに犬を買ってもらうかもしれない。 I might have (someone) buy me a dog for Christmas.
