JLPT N4 Grammar なければいけない (nakereba ikenai)

Japanese grammar is an essential part of learning the Japanese language.

It is the set of rules that govern the way words are combined to form sentences in the Japanese language. Japanese grammar is known for its complex system of particles, which are small words that are added to the end of nouns or verbs to indicate the grammatical function of the word in the sentence.

JLPT N4 Grammar なければいけない (nakereba ikenai)

なければいけない (nakereba ikenai) is a Japanese grammar construction that means “must do” or “have to do.” It is formed by combining the negative form of the verb なければ (nakereba) with the auxiliary verb いけない (ikenai).

Form

Verb (ない form) ければいけない

ければいけません

For example:

  1. 明日のテストは勉強しなければいけない。

I have to study for tomorrow’s test.

  1. 宿題をしなければいけない。

I have to do my homework.

Note that the verb that follows なければいけない (nakereba ikenai) is always in the negative form.

  1. パスポートを持って行かなければいけない。

I have to bring my passport.

I have to attend the meeting tomorrow.

  1. 先生に手紙を書かなければいけない。

I have to write a letter to the teacher.

  1. 毎晩、洗濯物をたたなければいけない。

I have to fold the laundry every night.

  1. このレポートを明日までに読みなければいけない。

I have to read this report by tomorrow.

  1. 定期的に健康診断を受けなければいけない。

I have to undergo regular health checkups.”
