JLPT N4 Grammar: より (yori)
より (yori) is a particle that is used to compare two things. It is often translated as “than” in English.
Form:
[A]より[B]
OR より + adjective
For example:
- 私は彼より背が高い (I am taller than he is)
- この本は昨日買った本よりも面白い (This book is more interesting than the one I bought yesterday)
- このレストランの料理は他のレストランよりもおいしい (The food at this restaurant is tastier than at other restaurants)
It is typically used to compare two nouns or noun phrases, though it can also be used to compare verb phrases and adjectives. The verb or adjective should be compared after this.
- この辞書は日本語で書かれているよりも英語で書かれた方がわかりやすい
(This dictionary is easier to understand if it is written in English rather than Japanese)
- この町は東京よりも小さい (This town is smaller than Tokyo)
- このスーパーは昨日行ったスーパーよりも広い (This supermarket is larger than the one I went to yesterday)
