JLPT N4 Grammar: られる (rareru) Japanese Potential Form

JLPT N4 Grammar: られる (rareru) Japanese Potential Form

The potential form of verbs in Japanese is indicated by the suffix “られる” (rareru) and it is used to indicate that someone or something has the ability to do something. This form is often used to express permission, possibility, or ability.

Form :

Ru-verb る -> られる

U-verb change “u” to “e” + る

やる やれる

する できる

くる こられる

Examples:

  1. これ食べられるんですか? Is this edible?  
  2. その魚は生で食べられる。 The fish can be eaten raw.  
  3. そんなに、食べられるの? Can you eat that much?  
  4. 柔軟な発想が求められる。 Flexible ideas are needed.  
  5. 人生はよく旅に例えられる。 Our life is often compared to a journey.  
  6. この曲は万人に受け入れられる This tune is a hit with everyone.  
  7. これは、食べられるだろうか? Could I eat this?  
  8. 子猫は撫でられるのが好きだ。 The kitten loves being stroked.  
  9. 明日は月食が見られるそうです I heard that you can see an eclipse of the moon tomorrow.  
  10. 隙を見せりゃ、やられるのさ。 “If you show ’em a weakness, you’ll get got.”
