JLPT N5 Grammar: しかし (shikashi) Meaning

Japanese grammar is an essential part of learning the Japanese language.

It is the set of rules that govern the way words are combined to form sentences in the Japanese language. Japanese grammar is known for its complex system of particles, which are small words that are added to the end of nouns or verbs to indicate the grammatical function of the word in the sentence.

JLPT N5 Grammar: しかし (shikashi) Meaning

however,” “but,” or “still.”

It is used to introduce a statement that contradicts or qualifies something that has been previously stated. For example:

この本は面白いです。しかし、内容が少し難しいです。

“This book is interesting. However, the content is a little difficult.”

It can also be used to introduce a new topic that contrasts with the previous one. For example:

私は朝ごはんを食べます。しかし、夜はお腹がいっぱいになるので、晩ごはんは食べません。

“I eat breakfast. However, since my stomach gets full at night, I don’t eat dinner.”

Here are ten sentences that include the conjunction しかし (shikashi):

  1. このレストランはとても美味しいです。しかし、お値段が高いです。

This restaurant is very delicious. However, the price is expensive.

  1. 私は英語ができます。しかし、フランス語はまだ勉強中です。

I can speak English. However, I am still studying French.

  1. 彼女はとても優しい人です。しかし、ときどき意地悪です。

She is a very kind person. However, she can be stubborn sometimes.

  1. 彼はスマートフォンを持っています。しかし、パソコンはありません。

He has a smartphone. However, he doesn’t have a computer.

  1. 私は日本語を話せます。しかし、書けません。

I can speak Japanese. However, I can’t write it.

  1. 私は今日は忙しいです。しかし、明日は暇です。

I am busy today. However, I am free tomorrow.

  1. この映画は面白かったです。しかし、私は泣いてしまいました。

This movie was interesting. However, I ended up crying.

  1. 彼女はとても美人です。しかし、人見知りです。

She is very beautiful. However, she is shy.
