Japanese grammar is known for its complex system of particles, which are small words that are added to the end of nouns or verbs to indicate the grammatical function of the word in the sentence.

JLPT N5 Grammar: じゃない・ではない

じゃない・ではない is the negative form which is a copula used to describe the identity or characteristics of a noun. じゃない can be used to negate a verb or adjective, as well as to negate a noun.

ではありません。 It is a Polite form.

ではない it is a Plain form.

And じゃない is a more casual way to say it.

ではなかった じゃなかった じゃありませんでしたではありませんでした

Example sentence

  1. これは魚じゃない。This is not a fish.
  2. 私は医者じゃない。I am not a doctor.
  3. 彼女は私の姉じゃない。She is not my sister.
  4. その車は新しいじゃない。 That car is not new.
  5. このレストランは日本料理じゃない This restaurant is not Japanese cuisine.
  6. 私たちは親戚じゃない。 We are not relatives.
  7. 彼はプロのサッカー選手じゃない。 He is not a professional soccer player.
  8. この服は高いじゃない。 This clothing is not expensive.
  9. 私たちは今夜パーティーに行くじゃない。 We are not going to a party tonight.
  10. その犬は大きいじゃない。 That dog is not big.
