JLPT N5 Grammar: ましょう (mashou) Meaning

ましょう (mashou) is a casual, informal way of suggesting or proposing an action. It is formed by combining the base verb “ます (masu)” which is the polite form of a verb, and the particle “よう (you)” which is used to suggest an action. It is used to suggest an action with a sense of friendliness, and it is generally used among friends or family.

Form :

Verb ます (stem form) ましょう

Examples:

  1. 食べましょうか。 Shall we eat?  
  2. 飲みましょうか。 Shall we drink?  
  3. こう しましょう。 Let’s do this (“this way”).  
  4. そう しましょう。 Let’s do that.  
  5. また会いましょう。 Let’s meet again.  
  6. 少し休みましょう。 Let’s take a rest for a while.  
  7. 手伝いましょうか。 Shall I help?  
  8. 拍手をしましょう。 Let’s applaud.  
  9. 私が払いましょう。 I’ll pay for that.  
  10. 私が行きましょう。 I’ll go.  
  11. 話を戻しましょう。 Let’s get back to what we were talking about.
