JLPT N5 Grammar: まで (made) Meaning

Japanese grammar is known for its complex system of particles, which are small words that are added to the end of nouns or verbs to indicate the grammatical function of the word in the sentence.

JLPT N5 Grammar: まで (made) Meaning

まで (まで) is a Japanese particle that means “until” or “up to.” It can indicate a time or place that marks the end of a range or period. 

Form

NOUN(時間) まで

今日の夜までに、宿題を終わらせなければなりません。I must finish my homework by tonight.

ここまで来て、もう一度考え直します。I will reconsider now that I have come this far.

まで can also indicate a degree or extent, such as how far or how long something goes or lasts. 

For example:

このテレビ番組は、午後10時までです。This TV program is on until 10 pm.

彼は、マラソンで42キロを走り切った。He ran 42 kilometers in the marathon.

Here are ten sentences using the particle まで:

  1. 今日の夜までに、宿題を終わらせなければなりません。 I must finish my homework by tonight.
  2. 彼女は、来月までに日本語を習得したいと言っています。She says she wants to learn Japanese by next month.
  3. ここまで来て、もう一度考え直します。 I will reconsider now that I have come this far.)
  4. 彼女は、午前9時までに起きなければなりません。She must wake up by 9 am.)
  5. 彼は、今日の夜までに宿題を終わらせるつもりです。He plans to finish his homework by tonight.
  6. 私たちは、今週末までにこのプロジェクトを終わらせることができると思います。 We think we can finish this project by the end of the weekend.
  7. このテレビ番組は、午後10時までです。This TV program is on until 10 pm.
  8. 彼女は、結婚式までにドレスを買いに行くつもりです。She plans to buy a dress by the time of the wedding.
  9. 彼は、マラソンで42キロを走り切った。He ran 42 kilometers in the marathon.
  10. 私たちは、今日の夕方までにこの仕事を終わらせることができると思います。We think we can finish this job by the end of the evening.)
