Japanese grammar is known for its complex system of particles, which are small words that are added to the end of nouns or verbs to indicate the grammatical function of the word in the sentence. JLPT N5 Grammar: や (ya) Particle Meaning

や (ya) is a particle in Japanese that is used to list items or to present alternatives. It is similar to the English word “or.”

Form: 

Noun や Noun

For example:

  1. 私はリンゴやバナナを買います。I will buy apples or bananas.
  2. 明日は雨や風が強いです。It will be rainy or windy tomorrow.

In lists, や is placed between the items being listed. In alternatives, it is placed between the options being presented.

Note that や is only used for listing items or presenting alternatives in casual or colloquial speech. 

 In more formal or written Japanese, the particle か (ka) is often used instead.

Here are five more examples of sentences using the particle や (ya):

  1. この本は日本語や英語で出版されています。This book has been published in Japanese or English.
  2. 彼女は私や彼を呼んでいます。She is calling me or him.
  3. 私たちは野球やサッカーをします。We play baseball or soccer.
  4. このレストランでは和食や洋食があります。This restaurant has Japanese or Western food.
  5. 今週は月曜日や火曜日に会議があります。There is a meeting on Monday or Tuesday this week.
