JLPT N5 Grammar: より~ほうが (yori ~hou ga) Meaning

JLPT N5 Grammar: より~ほうが (yori ~hou ga) Meaning

The expression “より~ほうが (yori ~hou ga)” is a Japanese grammatical construction that is used to express comparison. The construction can be translated as “more ~ than” or “rather ~ than”. The particle “より (yori)” is used to compare two items, and the particle “ほうが (hou ga)” is used to indicate which of the two items is preferable or superior.

Form

Verb-1 より Verb-2 ほうが ~

い-adj-1 より い-adj-2 ほうが ~

な-adj-1 より な-adj-2 +なほうが ~

Noun-1 より Noun-2 + のほうが ~

Examples

  1. 白いスカートより赤いスカートのほうが高いです。 Compared with the white skirt, the red one is more expensive.  
  2. バスケをするより、プールに行ったほうがいいです。 I’d prefer to go swimming rather than playing basketball.
  3. 私はフットボールの試合より映画のほうが見たいです。 I’d rather watch a movie than a football game.  
  4. 裕子さんより 真理子さんの ほうが 足が ながい。 Mariko has longer legs than Yuko.  
  5. ふつう 電車 より しんかんせんの ほうが はやい。 The Bullet Train is faster than a local train.
  6. 真理子さんより 鈴木さんの ほうが あたまが いい。 Suzuki is smarter than Mariko.  
  7. 私は歩いて帰るより、タクシーで帰ったほうがいいです。 I’d prefer to take a taxi rather than walk home.
  8. タマラさんは農村に住むより、都市に住むほうが好きです。 Tamara prefers to live in the country rather than in the city.  
  9. フランスご より イタリアごの ほうが かんたん だ。 More than French, the side of Italian is easier. = Italian is easier than French.  
  10. わしょくと ようしょくと、どっちの ほうが おいしい? Between Japanese food and Western food, which is more delicious?
