Learning essential words and phrases, as well as specialized terminology and idiomatic expressions, is essential for effective communication in Japanese.

Japanese Vocabulary:日

Meaning: day, sun

The kanji 日 represents the sun and means “day” in Japanese.

It is often used as part of compounds to form words such as 一日 (ichinichi, “one day”), 日中 (nichijou, “during the day”), and 毎日 (mainichi, “every day”).

It is also a common component in personal names and place names in Japan.

The pronunciation of 日 depends on the context in which it is used.

When it is read as “nichi,”  it is typically used as a noun to mean “day.”

When it is read as “jitsu,” it is typically used as a suffix to indicate a specific day, as in 今日 (kyou, “today”), and 明日 (ashita, “tomorrow”).
