N2 Grammar: ことだから (koto dakara) Learn Japanese

N2 Grammar: ことだから (koto dakara) Learn Japanese

ことだから” is a grammatical phrase in Japanese that is used to express the reason for something or to indicate that it is a fact. It can be translated to “because it is” or “it is the case that” in English. 

This phrase is often used to link two sentences together, where the first sentence provides the reason or explanation for the second.

Examples

  1. 鈴木君のことだから、もうすっかり海で泳ぎ始めているんだろうな。 Since it’s you we’re talking about, I bet you’ve already started swimming in the ocean.
  2. トムさんのことだから、余裕でN1にも合格するでしょう。

Since you’re talking about Tom, you’ll easily pass N1.

  1. あれ、ジョンさんがいませんね。彼のことだから遅刻はないと思うんですが、何かあったのかな。

Oh, John isn’t here. I don’t think I’m late because it’s him, but I wonder if something happened.

  1. 毎朝早起きのおばあちゃんのことだから、明日も5時には起きていることでしょう。

Since she is an old lady who wakes up early every morning, she will be up at 5 tomorrow as well.

  1. 人付き合いがあまりよくない彼のことだから、飲み会に誘っても断られると思うよ。

He doesn’t get along very well with people, so I think he’ll turn down even if you invite him to a drinking party.

  1. 忙しい彼のことだから、今夜の飲み会もきっと参加できないでしょう。

Since he’s busy, I’m sure he won’t be able to attend tonight’s drinking party.

  1. おしゃべり好きな部長のことだから、少なくともあと30分は話し続けるだろう。

I’m talking about the talkative manager, so I’ll probably keep talking for at least another half an hour.
