N5 Grammar: ている (te iru) Learn Japanese

Japanese grammar is an essential part of learning the Japanese language.

It is the set of rules that govern the way words are combined to form sentences in the Japanese language. Japanese grammar is known for its complex system of particles, which are small words that are added to the end of nouns or verbs to indicate the grammatical function of the word in the sentence.

N5 Grammar: ている (te iru) Learn Japanese

「ている」(te iru) is a Japanese grammar pattern that is used to express a continuing state or action. It is the progressive form of the verb

Form

1.Conjugate the verb to its present progressive form 

Examples:

食べている means “to be eating.”

寝ている  means “to be sleeping.”

話している means “to be talking.”

2.You can use this form to describe something that is happening right now, or something that has been happening for a period of time and is still continuing.

Examples:

私は今、本を読んでいます。I am reading a book now.”

彼女は昨日から熱があって、寝ています。She has had a fever since yesterday and has been sleeping.”

Here are sentences using the 「ている」(te iru) form:

  1. 今日は雨が降っているから、傘を持っていきましょう。

It’s raining today, so let’s bring an umbrella.

  1. 彼は毎日新しい本を読んでいるから、とても賢いです。

He is very smart because he reads new books every day.

  1. 私たちは今、日本語を勉強しています。We are studying Japanese now.
  2. 彼女は今までにたくさんのスポーツをするために、とても強いです。

She is very strong because she has done a lot of sports until now.

  1. お母さんは今、お菓子を作っています。Mom is making sweets now.
  2. 私たちの会社は、今までにたくさんの成功を収めています。

Our company has achieved a lot of success until now.”

  1. 彼らは今、留学しているから、とても英語が上手です。

They are very good at English because they are studying abroad now.”

  1. 私たちは今、新しい家を建てています。We are building a new house now.”
  2. 彼は今、新しい車を買っているから、とても嬉しそうです。

He is very happy because he is buying a new car now.”
