What does Hou Ga mean in Japanese JLPT N5

Japanese learners will find this blog post useful for understanding how to use より、のほうがThis is a great introduction to using Grammar in Japanese and some of the nuances that are important to know when trying to communicate with others.

ほうが Hou ga is used to compare the noun, usually come with より as structure N1 より、N2のほうがAdj です。Means N2 is more Adj than N1. For the example, 飛行機 は 新幹線 より 早い です。Airplanes are faster than the Shinkansen.

How do you compare two or more  things in Japanese?

  1.     Comparison 2 things.

Use the following sentences

Question : N1 と N2 と どちらが ~か。

Answer :  N の方(ほう)が~。

Example : 

1)

A:リンゴ と みかん と どちらがすきですか。

Which do you like more, apples or oranges?

B. みかんの ほうがすきです。 

I like oranges more.

2) Comparison 2 things. Using より

Use the following sentences

Sentences Structure : N1は N2 よりAdj. Comparative form 

Example:

1)

中国は日本よりずっと広いです。

China is much larger than Japan.

  1.  

中国語は日本語より難しいです。

Chinese is more difficult than Japanese.

3)      Comparison 2 things. Using より・・のほうが…Adj.

Example:

1) わたしよりあなたのほうがあたまがいいです。

       You are smarter than me.

4) Comparison of 3 or more things

You can use following Sentence structure.

Question : N1 と N2 と N3 の中で どれが いちばん~か。

Answer    : N が いちばん ~。

Example : 

1)

A: 外国の料理で 何 が一番好きですか。

Which foreign foods do you like the best?

B:タイ料理 が いちばんすきです。

I like the Thai food the most.
