Japanese Meaning of 受ける (ukeru) | JLPT N4

Japanese Vocabulary: 受ける

Meaning: “to receive” or “to accept.” 

It can also be used more abstractly, such as “to endure” or “to suffer.”

Examples:

  1. 空港で入国審査を受ける。 People go through a visa inspection at the airport.  
  2. 様々な国から援助を受ける。 They receive aid from different countries.  
  3. 祖父は手術を受ける為に入院した。 My grandfather went to the hospital for an operation.  
  4. 明日入学試験を受ける。不安で一杯だ。 Tomorrow, I’m going to take the school entrance exam. I’m full of anxiety.  
  5. 私は、その仕事を引き受けることにした。 I’ve decided to take that job.  
  6. テストを受けるなら鉛筆を持って行ってね。 If you are going to take a test, take a pencil, okay?  
  7. 彼から指導を受ける為にこの学校に入った。 I entered this school to receive guidance from him.  
  8. 悪い行いをすれば罰を受けるのは自明の理だ It’s self-evident that if you do a bad deed, you will be punished.
  9. 大学で数学概論の講義を受けた I heard a lecture on an introduction to mathematics at the university.  
  10. 学校で漢文の授業を受けている I have a class on Chinese classics at school.
