JLPT N1 Grammar: とは (towa) Meaning

JLPT N1 Grammar: とは (towa) Meaning

The particle とは (towa) is used to introduce a topic or subject, similar to the English phrase “as for” or “speaking of.” It can also be used to indicate contrast or comparison.

FORM

Verb (casual) とは

Noun +(だ/だった)

な-adjective +(だ/だった)

い-adjective + い

Examples

  1. あの国とは国交がない。 We don’t have any diplomatic relations with that country.  
  2. そんな ことは ない! That kind of thing—it isn’t! = There’s nothing like that.  
  3. よむことは たのしい。 Reading is fun.  
  4. 今日のことは忘れよう。 Let’s forget about what happened today.  
  5. 偉人が天才とは限らない A great man is not necessarily a genius.  
  6. 彼のしたことは合法です The thing he did is lawful.  
  7. 彼女とは、趣味が合う。 I share common tastes with her.  
  8. いもうとは 四歳 です。 My little sister is four years old.  
  9. うちのしゅうとは嫁に甘い The father-in-law is kind to his daughter-in-law.  
  10. それとこれとは別問題です This and that are different problems.
