JLPT N2 Grammar: やら~やら (yara~yara) Meaning

やら~やら is used in Japanese to indicate that something is happening in a haphazard or hazy way. It can also be used to indicate that something is happening in a way that is difficult to understand or explain.

  1. 掃除やら洗濯やらやることが多い。 I have many things to do, such as cleaning the house and doing the washing.  
  2. しゃぶしゃぶとやらを食べてみよう。 I’m going to try to eat something called “shabu shabu” or stuff like that.  
  3. 最近、勉強やらバイトやらで毎日忙しい。
  4. Lately, I’ve been busy with my studies and my part-time job.
  5. 昨日、お酒を飲み過ぎたせいで、頭が痛いやら吐き気がするやらで大変だったよ。
  6. I drank too much alcohol yesterday, so I had a headache and felt nauseous.
  7. 12月は部屋を掃除するやら年賀状を書くやらで忙しい。
  8. In December, I’m busy cleaning my room and writing New Year’s cards.
  9. 大事に育てた娘が結婚することになって嬉しいやら寂しいやら複雑な気持ちだ。
  10. I have mixed feelings, whether happy or sad that my daughter, whom I raised with such care, will get married.
