ずつ (zutsu) is a particle in Japanese that indicates “each” or “at a time.” It is often used to indicate that something is happening in small, incremental amounts or to express the idea of “one at a time.

 For example, “一つずつ (hitotsu zutsu)” means “one at a time” or “one by one.” It can also be used in conjunction with numbers to indicate that something is happening in groups of that number, like “三人ずつ (sannin zutsu)” meaning “in groups of three people.”

  9. あ、じゃ~それぞれ一本ずつお願いします。 Oh, well then, I’ll take one of each of those.  
  10. 母親は子供にキャンディを一つずつあげた。 The mother gave her children candies, one each.
  11. 遠くでフクロウが鳴く声が聞こえました。 In the distance, I could hear the voice of an owl hooting.  
  12. いいえ、遠くないよ。あるいて 5分 です。 No, it’s not far. Walking, it’s five minutes.
