JLPT Pass Rate Statistics 2022

158,493 applicants took the test for N1, N2, N3, N4, and N5 levels in Japan in July 2022. 

A total of 141,153 applicants were examined, and 44,367 were certified, resulting in a certification percentage :

24.3% for N1, 

26.4% for N2, 

42.0% for N3, 

38.5% for N4, 

and 63.4% for N5.

In addition to the Japanese applicants, there were also 267,732 overseas applicants who took the test. Out of these applicants, 215,352 were examinees and 99,538 were certified, resulting in a certification percentage of 

35.1% for N1, 

47.1% for N2, 

51.0% for N3, 

48.3% for N4, 

and 53.4% for N5.

The total number of applicants, including Japanese and overseas applicants, was 426,225, with 356,505 exam takers and 143,905 certifications, resulting in a certification percentage of 30.2% for N1, 37.3% for N2, 47.0% for N3, 45.6% for N4, and 54.1% for N5.

N3 and N5 levels have higher certification rates than other levels, which could be attributed to the difficulty level of the tests and the preparation of the examinees. 

It is also important to note that overseas examinees have a higher certification percentage than Japanese examinees. There is a possibility that examinees from overseas had more resources and support to prepare for their tests.
