JLPT N3 Grammar: といい / たらいい (to ii /tara ii) Meaning

「といい」and「たらいい」are both used to express suggestions or giving advice.

「といい」is used when the speaker is suggesting or giving advice to someone in a polite or formal manner.

Form :

Verb (casual) + と いい

Verb (た form) + ら

Examples:

  1. 楽しいといいです。 I hope it is fun.  
  2. 早く元気になるといいね。 I hope I’ll / you’ll feel better soon.  
  3. 試合に勝つといいですね。 I hope we win the game.  
  4. 今夜の花火は綺麗だといい。 I hope that tonight’s fireworks are pretty.  
  5. 今晩、勝てるといいですね。 I hope they can win tonight!  
  6. 明日は晴れるといいですね。 I hope it’ll be sunny tomorrow.  
  7. 良い文章は音読するといいよ It is good practice to read aloud good sentences.  
  8. あの選手は世界一になるといい。 I hope that athlete becomes the world’s best.  
  9. 今日の晩ご飯カレーだといいな。 It’d be nice if we had curry for dinner tonight.  
  10. これからもどんどん強くなるといい。 I hope that I gradually get stronger (from now).
